Advokatfirman Lindahl is moving into new premises in Malmö today. In the heart of Varvsstaden, “Snickeriet”, the oldest preserved building in the area, has been transformed into 2,500 square metres of inspiring modern offices with the award-winning firm Elding Oscarson as architects in the redevelopment project.
“Lindahl has experienced considerable growth in recent years, particularly here in Malmö, and we see that the trend is set to continue. Our new offices combine a first-class meeting environment for our clients with an exciting workplace full of character for our employees. It is gratifying to finally move in and we’re looking forward to continuing our journey in Varvsstaden,” says Johan Herrström, Lindahl Managing Partner in Malmö.
The oldest part of Snickeriet was built as early as the 1870s and has since been rebuilt and extended in stages in order to accommodate everything from timber and machine workshops to smaller offices. The building is included in both the Q and the K categories, which means that it must be preserved and may not be altered.
“Working with Varvsstaden and Elding Oscarson Arkitekter, we have focused on creating offices that comply with sustainability requirements and meet all modern needs, while preserving the soul of the building. This has resulted in a unique exciting combination of the modern and the historical, which we hope will inspire everyone who visits our premises,” says Johan Herrström.
Several major operations have made the transformation of Snickeriet possible, including an advanced level-raising in which the building was raised by around 50 cm to enable it to cope with rising sea levels and torrential rain. You can see a video of the spectacular raising operation here.
"We’ve been able to preserve large parts of the original building using the building’s existing wood and steel structures. We’ve also been able to reuse bricks from a dismantled part of the building as flooring in the reception area. We look back on a successful project in which the interplay of aesthetic requirements, preservation requirements and economic conditions has enabled us to obtain the fine results we’re now seeing. The extensive transformation of the building would not have been possible without the fruitful collaboration between Advokatfirman Lindahl, Malmö Stad, Varvsstaden AB, the architects Elding Oscarsson and the contractor Peab,” says Pia Andersson, CEO of Varvsstaden AB.
Snickeriet is in a perfect location in the middle of the new hub of pedestrian pathways and public transport that has been created as a result of the Styrmansbron bridge over the harbour basin, which significantly shortens the distance between Malmö City, Varvsstaden and Västra Hamnen.
