Environmental law in short:

Environmental law is a comprehensive legal field that regulates the relationship between humans and the external environment. It includes issues such as the management and regulation of environmentally hazardous activities, water operations, chemicals, waste management, remediation responsibility, protection of species and natural areas, and compensation issues related to environmental damage.

Since 1999, the central legislation in this area has been the Environmental Code. The purpose of the Environmental Code is to promote sustainable development for current and future generations. In addition to the Environmental Code, there is a large number of supplementary laws, regulations, and directives that govern various aspects of environmental law.

Environmental law is characterized by a large number of regulations, and the pace of change is rapid, particularly concerning waste and chemical legislation. The field is also marked by parallel applicable regulations that address different environmental aspects, such as the Planning and Building Act, the Fisheries Act, the Hunting Act, the Minerals Act, the Act on Measures Against Pollution from Ships, and the Forestry Act. Furthermore, much within the environmental law area, such as environmental quality standards, parts of species protection regulations, and the protection of natural areas, is governed by EU environmental legislation. There are also several international conventions that impact the field of environmental law.

How Lindahl can assist your business

We represent operators as counsel in permit applications for environmentally hazardous activities and water operations, concession reviews for power lines, conduct environmental legal reviews and risk assessments in commercial transactions, and handle various forms of disturbance, intrusion, and compensation issues both in and out of court.

Within the framework of transactions and planning before and during land developments, we often work with and have extensive experience in issues related to contaminated land. We also continuously provide assistance in the environmental and water law issues that arise in municipalities' work with comprehensive and detailed planning.

Energy law is another important part of our work, including energy trading and emissions rights, as well as regulatory issues in areas such as electricity and natural gas, hydrogen, and radiation safety.

We have a strong interest in the environmental and energy law field and continuously monitor and analyze legal developments within our clients' special areas. We regularly host seminars and can also tailor training sessions in the environmental and energy law field for our clients.
